Drop Pearls For THe Perfect Ears

Perhaps the most famous drop pearl is portrayed in the painting, Girl With a Pearl Earring, by Johannes Vermeer in 1665. He used pearls in eight other canvases painted in the mid 1600's. Pearls in those days were symbols not only of vanity, but of virginity.

Drop or pear shaped pearls are sometimes referred to as teardrop pearls and are often used to make earrings, pendants, or as a center piece in a necklace. The ancient Greeks believed pearls were formed when oysters rose up from the sea and opened to receive drops of dew from the Gods.

The shape of a cultured pearl is determined by the shape of the implant. The position in the oyster also helps to determine the shape of the pearl. If the implant is up against the shell, it may be flat on one side. While drop pearls are sometimes called baroque because they are not perfectly round, Baroque pearls are actually very irregular in shape.

No two pearls are exactly the same, but they are similar enough to be matched in sets for earrings. Cultured pearls are sorted by size and shape before being shipped. They are not usually drilled until they are purchased to make jewelry.

There is something appealing about the teardrop shape in gemstones and in pearls. They are certainly beautiful made into earrings or pendants. I think that a drop pearl as a centerpiece in a necklace or dangling from a broach make the piece much more interesting.
